Climate Change Blamed for Mexico’s Deadly Floods That Killed Dozens and Displaced Thousands

Experts are warning that climate change is intensifying Mexico’s rainy seasons after catastrophic floods left at least 66 dead and displaced thousands across the country’s central and Gulf regions.

Triggered by a stalled tropical depression and compounded by Hurricanes Priscilla and Raymond, the floods overwhelmed already saturated rivers and hillsides, turning streets into torrents of mud and debris. Authorities have deployed rescue teams to deliver food and aid to affected communities, but many residents accuse officials of downplaying the disaster.

President Claudia Sheinbaum said around 100,000 homes were damaged across five states, calling it one of the nation’s worst natural disasters in recent years. Scientists say extreme weather patterns like this will become increasingly common as global temperatures rise, urging stronger investment in flood resilience and emergency preparedness.
