A major humanitarian emergency is unfolding in Madagascar after Cyclone Gezani killed at least 38 people and displaced thousands across the country’s eastern coast.

The storm struck the port city of Toamasina, flattening homes and crippling public infrastructure. Authorities estimate that nearly 75% of the city has sustained damage, with entire neighborhoods left without electricity or clean water.

Emergency shelters are struggling to accommodate displaced families. Aid groups report shortages of food, medical supplies, and safe drinking water. Health officials warn that stagnant floodwaters could increase the risk of disease outbreaks in overcrowded areas.
