In a bid to prioritize discipline and uphold moral values, Bishop Enos Kitto Kagodo of Mukono Diocese has taken a decisive step by implementing a ban on promenade dances and parties in church schools. Citing troubling reports of misconduct and indiscipline during such events, the bishop expressed grave concerns over their negative impact on students’ behavior.
Promenade, a customary dance party for high school students, has increasingly become associated with issues like “coupling” and drug abuse, prompting Bishop Kagodo to intervene. During a gathering with headteachers from church-owned schools across multiple districts, the bishop underscored the importance of maintaining a conducive learning environment free from distractions and harmful influences.
The ban reflects Bishop Kagodo’s commitment to instilling discipline and fostering a culture of responsibility among students, aligning with the values upheld by the church. With a total of 270 church-owned schools under Mukono Diocese, the ban is poised to significantly influence school policies and practices across the region.
Susan Wamala Sserunkuuma, chairperson of the Mukono diocesan headteachers’ association, voiced support for Bishop Kagodo’s decision, acknowledging the need to address the challenges posed by promenade parties. She emphasized the importance of collaboration between parents, teachers, and students to promote positive behavior and uphold moral standards.
Recent incidents, including reports of extravagant displays and inappropriate behavior at prom events, have underscored the urgency of addressing the issue. Dr. John Chrysostom Muyingo, the State Minister for Higher Education, echoed these concerns, emphasizing the need for schools to prioritize academic excellence and ethical conduct.
In taking a firm stance against promenade parties, Bishop Kagodo sends a clear message about the importance of maintaining discipline and upholding moral values in church schools. By enforcing the ban, the bishop aims to create a safer and more conducive learning environment for students to thrive and succeed.
