The rising global prices for robusta coffee have led to a surge in thefts on Ugandan coffee farms, creating insecurity among farmers. Robusta prices have reached their highest level in decades, causing farm gate prices in Uganda to rise by 65% this year. The high value of the crop has made it an attractive target for thieves, leading farmers to adopt new security strategies, such as employing night guards and setting up bee hives as deterrents. However, the thefts not only cause immediate financial losses but also damage trees, reducing future yields. This trend poses a significant threat to Uganda’s plan to boost coffee production by 2030.
