Uganda’s late rally legend Charles Muhangi was posthumously honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Fortebet Real Stars Sports Monthly Awards for September 2024. Muhangi, who passed away in 2018, remains the only Ugandan to have won the Africa Rally Championship (ARC), a feat he achieved in 1999, solidifying his place as an all-time great in Ugandan motorsport.

The award was accepted by his widow, Petience Muhangi, during a ceremony at Lazo Restaurant in Kololo on October 8, 2024. This award serves as a reminder of Muhangi’s groundbreaking career and his lasting influence on the sport.

Football: Herbert Assimwe Earns Footballer of the Month Title

Herbert Assimwe, a rising star in the Startimes Uganda Premier League, was named Footballer of the Month for September 2024. Assimwe, playing for Wakiso Giants, scored in every game he participated in, including key matches against Mbale Heroes, Brightstars, and a brace against Maroons.

In addition to his league performances, Assimwe also impressed in the Airtel Masaza Cup, adding two more goals for Buwekula. His consistent performances throughout the month earned him the award, beating out competitors like Said Mayanja from KCCA FC and Enock Ssebagala from NEC FC.

Assimwe acknowledged his teammates in his speech: “It’s not easy to be here. This award is a result of teamwork at Wakiso Giants, and I dedicate it to my club, the Purple Sharks.”

In the boxing category, Herbert Matovu was awarded Boxer of the Month for his dominant first-round knockout victory against Tanzania’s Kheri Mbaruku during the Africa Boxing Union (ABU) regional title fight held at YMCA on September 7, 2024. Matovu’s performance secured him the accolade ahead of Ukasha Matovu and Owen Kibira, two top contenders in Uganda’s boxing scene.

Woodball: Isaac Ariho Helps Uganda Prisons Secure Third Consecutive League Title

In the Woodball category, Isaac Ariho was named Player of the Month for his exceptional contributions to Uganda Prisons, leading them to their third consecutive Woodball League title. Ariho dominated throughout the month, winning six out of seven matches, including a commanding 7-0 win over Fred Turyakira. He also posted crucial victories against Simon Peter Otim and Delick Ankunda at the final tournament at Makerere University.

Ariho’s achievements extended to doubles, where he teamed up with Abednego Okello and Isaac Nabugere to claim wins over strong KIU and KU pairs.
