Winter of War: Russia and Ukraine Escalate Attacks Amid Fading Hopes for Peace

Russia has unleashed a massive wave of drone and missile strikes across Ukraine, signaling a fierce escalation in the two-year conflict as peace efforts stall.

The Chernihiv and Kharkiv regions bore the brunt of overnight strikes that targeted energy grids and transport routes. Ukrainian reports indicate 12 Shahed drones attacked freight infrastructure near Nizhyn, derailing train services and cutting power across several districts.

In central Ukraine, strikes on Kryvyi Rih, President Zelenskyy’s hometown, caused extensive damage and injuries. “The enemy is strong, with advanced weapons and counter-systems,” Zelenskyy said, calling for sustained international support.

Ukraine struck back, firing artillery into Russia’s Belgorod region, killing three and damaging public buildings. Moscow said its air defenses intercepted more than 50 Ukrainian drones. Despite the growing toll, President Putin insists his full-scale invasion was “right and timely,” boasting that Russia has captured nearly 5,000 square kilometers of territory this year.

The U.S. has reportedly considered supplying Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine — a move that Washington analysts say is meant to send a clear message of sustained support. “There’s no sign of withdrawal; the parties must get serious about peace soon,” said John Erath, a senior policy director at the Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation.

However, optimism remains low. President Trump, following talks with Putin, conceded that achieving peace is “a daunting task.” As both sides prepare for another freezing winter of warfare, civilians brace for more blackouts, bombardments, and loss — with no end to the conflict in sight.
